Andy Burnham Rejects Political Donations Cap After Union Lobbying

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has withdrawn his support for capping political donations, rejecting amendments to the elections bill that would limit contributions from individuals or organizations. The decision follows a lobbying campaign by Labour's trade union backers, including the GMB union, who argued that such limits could undermine their ability to fund the party.

This retreat contradicts a promise Burnham made in May to campaigner Shaun Bowler, in which the Prime Minister suggested a potential cap of £500,000 to prevent parties from being unduly influenced by wealthy donors. Bowler has since accused the Prime Minister of breaking his word to voters and failing to deliver a wholesale culture change in Westminster.

Labour backbenchers, including Stella Creasy and Alex Sobel, have continued to push for caps ranging from £100,000 to £1 million. Creasy proposed a compromise cap of £500,000 to appease unions, arguing that millionaires are treating British politics as a plaything. Despite these efforts, the government is prioritizing other manifesto commitments, such as lowering the voting age to 16 and restricting foreign interference.

The elections bill returns to the House of Commons next week. Some MPs intend to continue pushing for additional measures, including bans on cryptocurrency donations and new restrictions on social media misinformation.
