Vietnam and US Negotiate Reciprocal Tariff Deal in Washington

Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington to reinvigorate stalled negotiations over a reciprocal tariff deal. The meeting follows a framework agreement reached in October, though progress has been hindered by three simultaneous Section 301 investigations into Vietnamese trade practices, specifically regarding counterfeit goods and online piracy.

Thang expressed readiness for "open, constructive" talks and signaled that Vietnam is willing to address US concerns regarding trade fraud and the illegal routing of Chinese exports through its borders. The US administration seeks to conclude these negotiations soon to resolve these systemic issues.

Vietnam aims to attract increased US investment to offset a $114 billion trade gap recorded in the first half of 2026. As part of this effort, Thang met with executives from Qualcomm Inc., Visa Inc., Axon Enterprise Inc., and Caterpillar Inc. to encourage further corporate expansion into Vietnam.
