US Restores Pacific Command Name in Strategic Shift

The United States Department of War renamed the Indo-Pacific Command back to US Pacific Command, sparking strategic concerns in India regarding the Quad alliance.

The United States Department of War announced the restoration of the U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) name on June 17, 2026. This move reverses a 2018 decision and returns the organization to the original designation established by President Harry S. Truman in 1947. Officials stated the change is symbolic, intended to honor the command's historical roots and military heritage without altering its missions, troop levels, or geographical area of responsibility.

The renaming is part of a broader rebranding effort under President Donald Trump, which includes transitioning the Department of Defense back to the Department of War. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the move as a return to realism. Analysts suggest the shift reflects a strategic transition from the coalition-based Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy toward a more transactional, one-on-one approach with China, following a recent summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

The decision drew criticism from Indian officials and politicians. Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor questioned if the move signals a decline in the importance of the Quad grouping. Further tensions arose after the USPACOM website was found to use a map excluding Jammu & Kashmir and depicting Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as Pakistani territory, prompting backlash from India's Congress party.
