U.S. Mediates Israel-Lebanon Peace Talks Amid Ceasefire Violence

The United States is hosting direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Washington to consolidate a ceasefire while fighting persists in southern Lebanon.

The United States is mediating a fifth round of direct peace talks between Israeli and Lebanese delegations in Washington from June 23 to 25, 2026. These negotiations aim to consolidate a fragile ceasefire and establish a comprehensive security agreement. A central proposal involves a pilot project to transfer parts of southern Lebanon from Israeli occupation to the Lebanese Armed Forces, provided the troops undergo U.S. vetting and training. Israel is demanding a step-by-step process that requires the dismantling of Hezbollah's infrastructure as a prerequisite for withdrawal.

Diplomatic efforts are complicated by ongoing violence and conflicting demands. On June 23, Israeli troops killed two people in Nabatieh al-Fawqa, an act Hezbollah condemned as a truce violation, while the Israeli military maintained it targeted terrorists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have repeatedly asserted that Israel will maintain a security zone in southern Lebanon as long as necessary to neutralize threats. Conversely, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has demanded a full, timetabled Israeli withdrawal and rejected any security buffer.

The situation is further linked to a June 18 memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran to end regional hostilities. However, Iran postponed nuclear talks in Switzerland, adopting a "no Lebanon, no deal" stance until Israeli aggression ceases. While the U.S. has backed a de-confliction cell involving Lebanon, the U.S., and Iran to monitor the truce, Israeli officials warn that the diplomatic process is at risk of derailing as Hezbollah feels emboldened by the current ceasefire.
