Labour Cancels Debate to Shield Andy Burnham From Scrutiny

The Labour Party cancelled a House of Commons debate to prevent Conservatives from forcing incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham to answer questions before the summer recess.

The Labour Party cancelled a scheduled Opposition Day debate in the House of Commons to block a Conservative Party effort to delay the summer recess. The opposition intended to push the parliamentary break back by one sitting day to force incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who takes office on Monday, to present his policy plans and answer questions before MPs.

Sir Alan Campbell, Leader of the House of Commons, defended the decision by stating that the House needed to prioritize discussions on a national security statutory instrument and the escalating conflict in Iran before the recess. He noted that the urgency of the Middle East crisis took precedence over the scheduled business.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and shadow leader Jesse Norman condemned the move as an unprecedented attempt to avoid accountability. They noted that by scrapping the vote, the government ensured Burnham will not face the Commons for at least 43 days, as Parliament is not scheduled to return until September 1. Norman described the maneuver as a humiliation for the government and a sign that the new Prime Minister is running scared of public scrutiny.
