Flavio Bolsonaro Pledges 200 Billion Real Fiscal Adjustment

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro pledged a 200 billion real budget cut to reduce national debt if elected president in the October 25 runoff.

Flavio Bolsonaro pledged to implement a 200 billion real ($39.49 billion) fiscal adjustment in the federal budget if he wins the presidential runoff election on October 25. Speaking with TV Globo's Jornal Nacional, the senator stated that he would reduce national debt by eliminating ministries, addressing mismanagement at state-controlled firms, and monetizing federal real estate assets.

Bolsonaro explicitly rejected reports that his campaign intends to cut social spending, halt minimum wage increases, or eliminate automatic adjustments for social benefits. He further confirmed that he would not reverse a recent constitutional amendment that shortens the Brazilian working week from six to five days.

The right-wing candidate currently leads in the polls against incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The proposed adjustments come as Brazil's gross debt stands at 82.9% of GDP.
