Pennsylvania Protesters Demand Moratorium on AI Data Centers
Environmental and community advocates rallied at the Pennsylvania State Capitol to demand a moratorium on hyperscale data center development and stricter environmental protections.
Environmental and community advocates gathered at the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg on Tuesday to protest the expansion of hyperscale artificial intelligence data centers. Organized by the Better Path Coalition and other advocacy groups, the demonstration urged citizens to sign constituent letters to lawmakers ahead of the November midterm elections.
Protesters raised alarms over air, light, and noise pollution, arguing these facilities damage public health and create chronic stress. Speakers criticized Governor Josh Shapiro for previously fast-tracking permits and promoting the industry. While the administration implemented GRID standards and an August executive order to tighten state and local control over projects, critics argue these measures are insufficient.
The rally coincided with legislative efforts to address data center energy and water usage, including Senate Bill 1349, which proposes a three-year moratorium on hyperscale development. Local opposition is also manifesting in specific projects, such as a proposed facility by Talen Energy and Amazon in Montour County.
In response, the Data Center Coalition Industry Group defended the facilities as essential infrastructure. The group stated the industry supports nearly 16,000 jobs and contributed $3.4 billion to the Pennsylvania economy in 2023.
