Delhi Police File 27 FIRs Against Opposition Leaders
Delhi Police registered 27 FIRs against Rahul Gandhi and other leaders following protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Delhi Police registered 27 First Information Reports (FIRs) over seven days to crack down on protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The legal actions target Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among other Opposition figures, following demonstrations sparked by allegations of vote theft and irregularities in electoral rolls.
Charges include assault, vandalism of public property, and obstruction of public servants. Authorities utilized a legal strategy based on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, invoking joint criminal liability in 22 cases to treat groups as collective entities. During the unrest, protesters attempted to march toward Jantar Mantar and allegedly forced entry into Akashvani Bhawan, leading to the detention of 91 people, including several Members of Parliament.
In preparation for a larger demonstration scheduled for October 10 at Jantar Mantar, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party and student groups, police launched a wide-scale operation to block participants. Authorities established six detention centers and requested the closure of gates at 57 Delhi Metro stations. Reports indicate that activists were detained on trains in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, while leaders were placed under house arrest in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
