Ukraine Strikes Russian and Iranian Vessels in Caspian Sea

Over a recent weekend, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces conducted long-range drone strikes against two vessels in the Caspian Sea. Zelensky stated the targets included a Russian missile boat and ships transporting military cargo from Iran, claiming the operation achieved "very good results."

Iran and Russia disputed these accounts, asserting the targeted vessel, identified as the Ana, was a commercial ship carrying iron from Astrakhan, Russia, to Anzali, Iran. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov maintained the ship carried civilian cargo. Iran reported one death and three injuries resulting from the attack. In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's Chargé d'Affaires in Tehran.

Iranian spokesperson Esmail Baghaei condemned the strike as "dangerous adventurism" and described the Ukrainian president's behavior as "theatrical yet highly dangerous." Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha defended the action, calling the regime in Tehran a "direct accomplice to Russian aggression."

The strikes occurred while Zelensky visited Washington to meet with President Donald Trump. The Caspian Sea serves as a critical corridor for Russia and Iran to move military hardware and bypass Western sanctions, particularly as tensions rise in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz faces closures.
