Abdul El-Sayed Urges Decisive Victory in Michigan Senate Race

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is campaigning for a Michigan Senate seat while facing Republican attacks and challenges securing support among Black voters.

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is competing in a high-stakes U.S. Senate race in Michigan against Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim senator in U.S. history, is running on a progressive platform featuring guaranteed health care and paid leave. Republicans have spent $78 million to portray him as radical, while El-Sayed has responded with confrontational rhetoric, including taunting President Donald Trump to visit the state.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," El-Sayed argued that Democrats must win the November 3 midterm elections by massive numbers to prevent Trump and Rogers from denying the results. He expressed concern that his opponents are not committed to democratic institutions, citing Rogers' previous claims that a 2024 Senate race was stolen. Trump told NBC News he would accept the results but warned against "cheating."

El-Sayed is employing a strategy of political universalism, focusing on common economic issues rather than identity-specific appeals. However, a Washington Post-Schar School poll indicates he has struggled with Black voters, with only 67% backing him despite 83% wanting Democratic control of the Senate. To bolster support, Kamala Harris has campaigned for him, and Barack Obama is scheduled to appear on October 24.

Additionally, El-Sayed has faced criticism from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Together for Michigan super PAC over his initial reaction to a synagogue attack near Detroit. He has since expressed regret for those comments and reaffirmed his commitment to Jewish safety.
