Donald Trump Drops Some BBC Defendants in Defamation Suit
Donald Trump dismissed claims against two BBC production arms while maintaining a multi-billion dollar defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation.
President Donald Trump dismissed defamation claims against BBC Studios Distribution Limited and BBC Studios Productions Limited on Thursday. However, he continues to pursue a primary lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation for billions of dollars in the Southern District of Florida.
The legal action stems from a 2024 'Panorama' documentary. Trump alleges the broadcaster maliciously edited his January 6, 2021, speech to remove calls for peaceful protest and falsely imply he encouraged the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. In response, the BBC apologized for the edits and removed the program from streaming services, though it maintains the content was not defamatory.
The BBC has sought to dismiss the case, arguing that Trump's subsequent election victory proves the documentary did not harm his reputation. Trump's legal team has countered that the broadcaster is conducting a "fishing expedition" by requesting his private financial records. A trial date is set for February 2027 in Florida.
