U.S. Partners with Westinghouse for $80 Billion Nuclear Buildout

The U.S. government partnered with Westinghouse, Cameco, and Brookfield Asset Management to build at least $80 billion in nuclear reactors to power artificial intelligence data centers.

The United States government has entered into a binding term sheet with Westinghouse Electric Company and its owners, Cameco Corporation and Brookfield Asset Management, to construct at least $80 billion of new nuclear reactors. Negotiated during President Donald Trump's visit to Japan, the partnership focuses on deploying Westinghouse AP1000 and AP300 technology to meet the surging electricity demands of artificial intelligence and data centers. The initiative aims to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity to 400 gigawatts by 2050, with a target of having 10 large reactors under construction by 2030.

Under the agreement, the federal government will arrange financing and facilitate permitting approvals, while retaining the final investment decision. In exchange, the government will receive a 20 percent participation interest in Westinghouse cash distributions exceeding $17.5 billion. If Westinghouse reaches a $30 billion valuation and pursues an initial public offering by January 2029, the government may acquire a minority equity stake of up to 20 percent.

The deal is linked to a broader bilateral agreement where Japan may invest up to $332 billion in U.S. energy infrastructure. While officials claim the project will create over 100,000 construction jobs and reinvigorate the domestic industrial base, critics warn that the financial incentives could compromise the independence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The White House has dismissed these concerns, asserting that the regulatory regime remains unchanged.

Following the announcement, Cameco shares rose over 24%, and other uranium stocks, including NexGen Energy, saw significant gains due to the anticipated increase in raw uranium demand.
