Rachel Reeves Urges UK Return to European Union
Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves called for the United Kingdom to rejoin the European Union, while Prime Minister Andy Burnham maintains current Labour red lines.
Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that the United Kingdom's future lies within the European Union, asserting that Brexit has made the country "poorer, weaker and less secure." Writing in the Sunday Times, Reeves advocated for the UK to rejoin the bloc and specifically urged progress toward entry into the Security Action for Europe defense partnership.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has responded by signaling an "open conversation" about the EU and intends to explore options following a UK-EU summit in Brussels this month. At that summit, Burnham seeks to finalize agreements regarding food and drink, emissions trading, and a youth mobility scheme.
Despite the pressure from Reeves, Burnham remains committed to established Labour red lines, which include no return to freedom of movement or the single market. He has cautioned his cabinet against advocating for specific renegotiation options, stating that any fundamental change to post-Brexit arrangements would be for the public and the next parliament to decide.
