Democrats Lead Generic Ballot Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Democratic candidates hold a national polling advantage as independent voters express dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's economic and foreign policy records.

Democratic candidates hold an advantage in national generic ballot polling as the United States approaches the 2026 midterm elections. Despite this lead, control of Congress remains uncertain, with the Cook Political Report classifying 22 House and seven Senate contests as toss-ups.

Donald Trump is positioning the elections as a referendum on his record to mobilize low-propensity supporters. However, this strategy faces headwinds from independent voters, who show increasing dissatisfaction with the administration's handling of the economy and the war in Iran. September 2026 polling indicates only 23% of independents approve of the president's performance, and 83% believe the administration lacks a clear plan to end the conflict in Iran.

Republican pollster David Winston warned that these unhappy independents threaten continued GOP control of Congress. Consequently, candidates in competitive races across Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Michigan are attempting to balance base mobilization with policy-based appeals. In Michigan's 10th Congressional District, candidate Mike Bouchard has pledged to combat "radical socialism" as part of the campaign effort.
