South Asian Voters Shift Toward Democrats Ahead of Midterms

A survey shows 25% of South Asian Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2024 now plan to support Democratic candidates in the November 3 midterms.

A survey by the advocacy group Indian American Impact reveals that at least 25% of South Asian Americans who voted for Donald Trump in 2024 intend to support Democratic candidates in the November 3 midterm elections. While 67% of former Trump supporters remain with the Republicans, 96% of those who voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 plan to back Democrats. Voters cite the cost of living, healthcare, jobs, and education as primary drivers for their decisions.

These shifts are particularly critical in battleground states such as Michigan and Texas. In Texas, where over 700,000 South Asian residents live, Democratic nominee James Talarico is in a tight race against Republican Ken Paxton. In Michigan, the South Asian population of roughly 187,000 could influence outcomes where previous non-voter numbers exceeded the 2024 Senate race margin.

The midterms will determine 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, shaping the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. Several Indian-origin incumbents, including Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, and Suhas Subramanyam, are seeking re-election to Congress. Other high-profile candidates include Vivek Ramaswamy for Governor of Ohio and Saritha Komatireddy for New York Attorney General. The results will impact the legislative environment for approximately 5.2 million people of Indian origin in the United States.
