UN Reports Potential War Crimes as Israel Devastates Southern Lebanon

Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, which began on March 2, have caused widespread civilian suffering and significant infrastructure collapse. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that Israeli airstrikes and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas may constitute war crimes, resulting in over 4,300 deaths and 12,200 injuries.

In the city of Nabatiyeh, bombardment has decimated residential areas and the historic covered market, while Israeli forces seized Beaufort Castle in May and established a presence beyond the official security zone. Lebanese health officials report that at least one in five of the 4,200 deaths are women or children. Israel maintains it is targeting the infrastructure of Hezbollah, and Defense Minister Israel Katz stated in July that forces demolished over 15,000 homes in border villages to create a buffer zone.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that damaged water systems in the South and Nabatieh governorates have cut off safe drinking water for more than 700,000 people. While over 821,000 displaced people have attempted to return home, 360,000 remain displaced. Local officials, including the Mayor of Nabatiyeh, have advised residents against returning due to ongoing drone activity and a lack of basic necessities.
