Byron Donalds Campaigns for Florida's First Black Governor
Republican nominee Byron Donalds is campaigning to become Florida's first Black governor while facing criticism over his alignment with Donald Trump.
Republican nominee Byron Donalds is campaigning to become the first Black governor of Florida, focusing his efforts on winning over Black voters who traditionally support the Democratic Party. Donalds is utilizing targeted advertisements in South Florida, visiting Black churches, and holding forums at Florida A&M University to promote a conservative platform centered on business growth and affordability.
Donalds remains the favorite to win due to Florida's Republican registration advantage, but he faces challenges regarding his perceived alignment with President Donald J. Trump and former Governor Ron DeSantis. Critics, including some Black leaders, have expressed concern over Donalds's positions on diversity initiatives and immigration enforcement. Donalds has pushed back against claims that he is a puppet for Trump, stating, "That’s not true. I have my own thoughts, my own opinions, I have my own ideas."
Democratic nominee David Jolly, a former Republican, has characterized Donalds as having an "anti-Black agenda." State Senator Shevrin Jones, an advisor to the Jolly campaign, stated he would "forfeit having the first Black governor any day" if the candidate had participated in the "degradation" of Black people. However, some Black Democrats have endorsed Donalds, citing Jolly's decision to select Gwen Graham, a white candidate, as his running mate. Gainesville City Commissioner Cynthia Chestnut endorsed Donalds, noting that overqualified candidates were passed over for the lieutenant governor position.
