Andy Burnham Caps English Bus Fares at Two Pounds

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a £2 cap on single bus tickets across most local routes in England to alleviate the cost of living. The measure, backed by £400 million in additional funding, will take effect on January 1, 2027, for the remainder of the year. This initiative could reduce fares by one-third for millions of passengers.

Chancellor John Healey expressed support for the move, aligning with the government's broader effort to ease financial pressures on citizens. The initiative follows a separate government announcement to remove VAT from domestic electricity bills starting October 1.

Reaction to the policy is mixed. Some financial experts believe the cap will stimulate economic growth, while others argue the funding should be diverted to road infrastructure or long-term economic reform. Debbie Porter of Destination Digital Marketing warned against a city-centric approach, noting that rural communities representing 47 million people must have existing bus routes to benefit from the fare reduction.
