Gen Z Voters Fuel Democratic Midterm Victories

Young voters under 30 overwhelmingly backed Democratic candidates in the midterm elections, citing disillusionment with Donald Trump's economic policies and military actions against Iran.

Young voters under 30 drove a significant Democratic victory in the Tuesday midterm elections, supporting the party by nearly 50 points according to exit polling. This shift represents a sharp reversal from the 2024 presidential election, when Gen Z voters had trended toward Donald Trump. While this demographic comprised only 11% of the total vote, their support was decisive in flipping House and Senate seats, including a Texas Senate race where Democrat James Talarico won the Gen Z demographic by 60 points.

Exit polling indicates that 43% of voters aged 18-29 cited economic issues as their primary concern, with over 80% stating that Trump's policies worsened economic conditions. Voters specifically cited disillusionment with the president's tariff strategies, which increased inflation, and his decision to go to war with Iran. Analysis from CIRCLE shows that 15% of young people who supported Trump in 2024 switched to Democratic House candidates, with notable gains among young white and Latino men.

The College Republican Patriot Coalition attributed the defeat to the Trump administration and the Republican Party. Meanwhile, progressive leaders and youth organizations warned that this support is fragile. The Alliance for Youth Action noted that young voters have a short leash and must see results on AI regulation, government corruption, and the cost of living before the 2028 election.
