Libya Summons US Envoy After Trump's 'Terror-Infested' Remarks

Libya's Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. chargé d'affaires after President Donald Trump described the nation as a 'shithole country' during a Georgia campaign rally.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Libya summoned the United States chargé d'affaires on October 25 to protest offensive remarks made by Donald Trump. During a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, Trump described Libya, Yemen, Haiti, and Somalia as "shithole countries" and "terror-infested" while criticizing Senator Jon Ossoff for sponsoring immigration legislation. Both the Government of National Unity in Tripoli and rival eastern administrations condemned the comments, with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah calling the remarks an affront to the Libyan people.

Following the backlash, Trump posted on Truth Social to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to Libya, describing its people as "proud, resilient, and hospitable." While praising Libya's counter-terrorism cooperation and joint efforts to defeat ISIS, Trump demanded that the country immediately stop serving as a primary transit route for illegal migration across the Mediterranean.

Trump further urged an end to foreign interference in Libyan domestic affairs to allow the nation to regain its sovereignty. He stated that the United States supports the unification of Libya's institutions and the transition toward national elections, though he maintained that the country cannot remain a corridor for illegal immigration.
