ICE Arrests 426 People in Indiana Immigration Sweep

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 426 people in Indiana during a five-day operation from August 30 to September 3. The initiative, titled Operation Safe Community: Indiana, targeted non-citizens with records of drug trafficking, weapons offenses, sex crimes, assault, and domestic violence.

Jim Banks, a U.S. Senator from Indiana, is using the operation's results to push Congress to codify the immigration policies of President Donald Trump into law to prevent future administrations from reversing them. Banks is promoting a seven-bill immigration package that addresses family-based immigration, H-1B visas, and birthright citizenship.

Banks also criticized the Republican-led Senate for failing to pass the SAVE Act, which would mandate documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration. Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the delay, citing the difficulty of securing the 50 votes required for reconciliation. The debate follows a September 18 arrest by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of a non-citizen for casting a federal ballot.
