Mark Carney Announces $11.3 Billion Icebreaker Fleet Investment

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $11.3 billion federal investment to construct six new heavy and medium icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard. The vessels will be built at the Chantier Davie shipyard in Lévis, Quebec, using Canadian steel in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada's Buy Canadian procurement policy.

Carney stated that the first steel for the project will be cut next fall, with the first ship delivered in five years and the full fleet entering service within ten years. The project is expected to support 5,000 jobs. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette described the contract as a means to protect the province's economic sovereignty.

The investment comes as Canada faces new tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump following the collapse of trade talks between the two nations.
