Indian Markets Open Higher Amid US-Iran Peace Optimism
Indian benchmark indices rose Thursday as easing crude prices and hopes for a US-Iran peace deal bolstered investor sentiment.
Indian benchmark indices opened higher on August 6, 2026, supported by falling Brent crude prices and optimism surrounding diplomatic negotiations to end the conflict between the United States and Iran. The BSE Sensex gained 201.43 points to open at 78,782.43, while the NSE Nifty rose 16.35 points to 24,641.
Market stability is linked to reports of negotiations facilitated by the Government of Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Donald Trump stated that these discussions are progressing well, though a proposed agreement may grant Iran control over ships entering the Gulf. Experts note that critical issues regarding maritime inspections, shipping rights, and transit fees remain unresolved.
Domestic factors also contributed to the gains, including a better-than-expected June earnings season and increased buying in Reliance Industries. The market was further supported by domestic institutional investors purchasing equities worth Rs 2,883 crore, which offset Rs 943 crore in sales by foreign investors.
Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India maintained its benchmark policy repo rate at 5.25% on August 5. Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that future rate moves will be data-dependent. The central bank also raised its GDP forecast for the current fiscal year to 6.7% and lowered its inflation projection to 5%.
