House Democrats Accuse Trump of Hijacking 250th Anniversary Celebrations

House Democrats allege President Donald Trump diverted funds and used a shadow organization, Freedom 250, to turn the U.S. 250th anniversary into a partisan political tool.

Democratic members of the House Natural Resources Committee released a report on July 2, 2026, alleging that Donald Trump hijacked the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations for personal and political gain. The report, titled "From Vanity to Insanity," claims the administration created Freedom 250, a public-private partnership and LLC under the National Park Foundation, to supplant the bipartisan, congressionally chartered America250 commission.

Lawmakers allege Freedom 250 acted as a shadow organization that misled donors through a bait-and-switch scheme, providing routing information that diverted contributions intended for America250. The report further claims the administration steered millions in taxpayer funds away from the original commission, leaving America250 with a $100 million shortfall. Specific allegations include the sale of presidential access through sponsorship packages, the awarding of contracts to political allies, and the use of AI-driven data collection during public events to identify persuadable voters for the GOP.

Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez dismissed the allegations as a "partisan smear," asserting that the organization was created to rescue the celebration from years of failed planning. To resolve tensions, the two groups reportedly agreed that America250 would manage events in cities nationwide while Freedom 250 oversees festivities in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, watchdog groups have criticized Freedom 250 for using an RSVP portal that redirected ticket seekers to a Republican fundraising platform.
