Trump Receives Court Permission to Revise BBC Defamation Suit
Donald Trump received court permission to amend his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC to limit the disclosure of his business financial records.
US District Judge Roy K. Altman granted Donald Trump permission to revise a $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed in December against the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC). The revised complaint removes a specific claim that a 12-second documentary clip caused massive financial damage to his business.
The lawsuit centers on a BBC edit of a speech delivered before the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, which Trump alleges was manipulated to make it appear he called for violence. While the BBC apologized for the edit, the organization denies defaming the president and has characterized the request to amend the suit as "gamesmanship" intended to avoid disclosing financial data.
By removing the claim of direct business damage, Trump seeks to limit the scope of financial records the BBC can subpoena from the Trump Organization. However, Judge Altman ruled that Trump may still be required to provide some financial information because the multibillion-dollar claim for damages remains a central part of the litigation.
