Democrats Regain Congress as Trump Coalition Fractures

Democrats regained control of Congress after a decisive shift in Latino and young male voters away from the Republican Party during the 2026 midterms.

The Democratic Party regained control of the United States Congress by significant margins in the 2026 midterm elections. The victory was driven by a collapse in support from the coalition that elected Donald Trump in 2024, particularly among Latino voters, men under 30, and non-MAGA Republicans.

Electoral shifts occurred in traditional Republican strongholds, with Texas becoming effectively blue and Kansas electing its first Democratic senator in nearly a century. CNN Voter Poll data shows that approximately 10% of Trump voters in states like Ohio, Iowa, and South Carolina backed Democratic Senate candidates, while 7% did so nationally. Latino support for Republicans dropped from 43% in 2024 to roughly one-third in these midterms.

Voters cited poor economic conditions and military action against Iran as primary drivers of dissatisfaction. The backlash was further fueled by the administration's aggressive deportation campaigns, which included raids at schools and churches and the racial profiling of Spanish speakers. Additional friction arose from efforts to eliminate birthright citizenship.

Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican losses to this shift in loyalty rather than voter turnout, noting that many individuals who supported the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 switched to Democratic candidates in 2026.
