Danielle Smith Urges Unity Ahead of Alberta Referendum
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is campaigning for conservative unity and provincial stability ahead of an October 19 referendum on independence and constitutional reform.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has launched a ten-question referendum scheduled for October 19, featuring a primary vote on provincial independence alongside nine proposals regarding immigration and constitutional reform. The measures include increasing provincial control over immigration and restricting social services for non-permanent residents. Smith's government has spent $4 million on advertising to promote the ballot, though polling indicates significant voter confusion and opposition to the nine non-independence questions.
In a recent closed-door meeting with independence supporters in Calgary, Smith urged the conservative movement to remain united and support the option for Alberta to remain in Canada. She warned that political fragmentation could lead to the election of an NDP government, noting that she has been part of the problem of splitting the movement in the past. While Smith expressed a desire for more provincial autonomy, she stated that Prime Minister Mark Carney appears prepared to work with the province.
Opposition to the referendum has coalesced into a broad coalition including labor unions, religious leaders, and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. The group Alberta's Voice has launched a "No to the Nine" campaign, while some separatists have dismissed the immigration and constitutional questions as a political gimmick designed to deflect from the core issue of independence.
