Willie Nelson and Greg Abbott Oppose Rural AI Data Centers

Musician Willie Nelson published an open letter and social media posts urging residents of his hometown, Abbott, Texas, and other rural communities to oppose the construction of AI data centers. Nelson described the facilities as "loud, water thieving, light polluting" hubs that threaten farmland, deplete water resources, and undermine the livelihoods of small family farmers. He argued that the strength of rural America depends on open spaces rather than large industrial footprints.

This opposition follows reports that over 250 AI data centers are planned across Texas, including sites by developers Cyrus One and Nexus near Abbott. As a co-founder of Farm Aid, Nelson framed the issue as a struggle for resource control, stating that those who control food and water control the masses.

In response to the growing backlash, Governor Greg Abbott has shifted his position from promoting Texas as an AI epicenter to proposing a ban on new data centers in rural neighborhoods. Abbott is seeking stricter regulations on water reuse and requiring developers to add new power capacity to the state electricity grid to protect constituents from rising rates and ensure development does not come at the cost of local communities.
