EU Fast-Tracks Antitrust Review for Project Bromo Satellite Venture
The European Union is accelerating the antitrust approval process for Project Bromo, a satellite joint venture between Leonardo, Airbus, and Thales.
The European Commission is preparing to fast-track the antitrust approval process for Project Bromo, a satellite joint venture formed by Leonardo SpA, Airbus SE, and Thales SA. The initiative aims to create a European industrial champion to reduce the bloc's reliance on American providers, specifically SpaceX, and to compete with Chinese firms in the global space economy.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has described the project as essential for the future of the region's space economy. However, Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera has cautioned that approval is not automatic. The venture currently faces opposition from suppliers and unions regarding employment and competition concerns.
If the partner companies provide sufficient remedies to address these concerns, the deal may receive clearance following a phase 1 review lasting approximately one month. Failure to provide these remedies will result in a more extensive, in-depth investigation into the merger.
