Trump Pushes AI Infrastructure Growth via Private Gas Plants

Donald Trump has directed artificial intelligence companies to rapidly expand infrastructure to maintain U.S. dominance over China. To prevent the strain on public electrical grids and avoid increasing household energy costs, the administration requires AI firms to construct or purchase their own independent energy sources.

This policy has led to the proposal or active construction of at least 82 gas-burning power plants nationwide, according to the Environmental Integrity Project. Texas has emerged as a primary hub for this expansion by aggressively fast-tracking permits for on-site power plants. Consequently, Texas may overtake Virginia as one of the world's largest data center markets.

The surge in infrastructure has triggered political backlash in states like Michigan and Kansas, where candidates are campaigning for moratoriums or bans on data centers due to their impact on local energy prices. In Michigan, a large OpenAI data center has become a focal point of local opposition.

In March, tech leaders from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI signed a nonbinding pledge to pay for their own power. Despite this commitment, consumer electricity costs continue to rise. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has entered the fray by acquiring a company specializing in rapid-deployment gas and diesel turbines to compete for power resources.
