President Tinubu Rejects Demands to Sack Minister David Umahi

President Bola Tinubu refused to dismiss Works Minister David Umahi following the death of a medical staff member at the minister's private residence.

President Bola Tinubu rejected demands for the dismissal of David Umahi, the Minister of Works, following the death of Mary Habila on June 27. Habila, a nurse on the minister's medical team, died at Umahi's private residence in Ebonyi State.

In a social media video, Umahi stated that despite public outrage and political pressure to remove him, the president instructed him to remain focused on building more roads. He remarked that "Power and might don’t belong to social media, it belongs to God."

The incident prompted the Incorporated Trustees of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Associations to file a N20 billion lawsuit against Umahi for breach of duty of care. While the minister requested an autopsy through the Ebonyi State Police Command to determine the cause of death, Habila's family rejected the request and demanded her burial. Authorities have not yet released the final results of investigations into the circumstances of the death.
