British Officials Visit Detained Couple at Evin Prison
British officials conducted their first consular visit in 112 days to Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who are serving 10-year espionage sentences in Iran.
British officials visited Lindsay and Craig Foreman at Evin Prison on Monday, marking the first consular contact with the couple in 112 days. The couple was arrested in January 2025 during a motorcycle trip and sentenced to 10 years in prison on espionage charges they deny. They had been without access to officials since June 15.
Hugo Shorter, the British Ambassador, conducted the visit following a September meeting at the United Nations General Assembly between British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During that meeting, Miliband requested the couple's immediate release.
Family members report that Craig Foreman has regained 10kg after a summer hunger strike and that the couple's spirits have improved. However, Lindsay Foreman still lacks prescribed medication and cannot contact her lawyers in the United Kingdom. While prison authorities promised weekly phone calls, the couple's communication had been severed in May following a media interview. UN experts have characterized the detention as "state hostage taking for political leverage."
