Trump Reduces U.S. Troops Across NATO Eastern Flank

The United States will reduce its military presence on NATO's eastern flank, redeploying the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division to Kentucky without replacement. The drawdown affects approximately 3,000 troops across Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia, with withdrawals from the latter three countries scheduled for December 2025. In Romania, the force will drop from over 1,700 to approximately 1,000 personnel, primarily impacting the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base while maintaining operations at Deveselu and Campia Turzii.

Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth framed the shift as a strategic rebalancing toward China and Latin America, asserting that European allies must assume greater responsibility for their own conventional defense. While the U.S. Army Europe and Africa maintains that the overall U.S. force posture in Europe remains larger than it was before 2022, the move sparked bipartisan criticism in Washington. Senators Roger Wicker and Jeanne Shaheen, along with Representative Mike Rogers, argued the reduction was uncoordinated and undermines deterrence against Russia following recent drone incursions into NATO airspace.

Romanian officials, including Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, stated they respect the decision and will continue investing in national defense. To address the security gap, NATO Land Forces Commander General Christopher Donahue presented a new defense plan in Brussels titled "The Concept of the Eastern Barrier Containment Line," which emphasizes autonomous systems and improved data exchange to protect the alliance's eastern borders.
