Nigerian Political Leaders Clash Over 2027 Election Predictions

Political leaders and commentators in Nigeria are issuing conflicting predictions for the 2027 presidential election. Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State and candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), declared in Ibadan that he will defeat incumbent President Bola Tinubu. Makinde cited divine support and the absorption of former All Progressives Congress (APC) members into the APM as evidence that his victory is inevitable.

In contrast, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire of the APC asserted in Akure that President Tinubu will win the election, dismissing the opposition as incapable of mounting a serious challenge. Adegbonmire defended the administration's economic reforms and rejected proposals by African Democratic Congress candidate Atiku Abubakar to restore the petrol subsidy.

The dispute extends to the Federal Capital Territory, where businessman Isaac Fayose challenged Minister Nyesom Wike's claims that opposition parties lack popularity in Abuja. Fayose argued that Peter Obi and the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) maintain strong support in the capital. While Wike predicted a comfortable win for Tinubu in both the FCT and Rivers State, Fayose expressed concerns over potential vote suppression and called for the adoption of opinion polls and mock elections to gauge true public sentiment.
