Democrats and Local Officials Sue Trump Over Election Interference
Democratic lawmakers and the Arlington County Board filed lawsuits to block the Trump administration from purging voter rolls and deploying armed agents to polling sites.
A coalition of Democratic lawmakers and campaign committees, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block the Trump administration from interfering in state election administration. The plaintiffs allege a pattern of intimidation, claiming the administration is using debunked voter fraud theories to pressure states into removing eligible voters and threatening local officials with prosecution.
Specific grievances include Department of Homeland Security demands to purge noncitizens based on lists the plaintiffs call shoddily compiled. In Nevada, the department claimed 16,000 noncitizens were registered, though state records later confirmed those individuals were citizens. In California, the Justice Department charged over two dozen residents and sued to block the counting of up to 20,000 mail-in ballots from suspected noncitizens.
Simultaneously, the Arlington County Board in Virginia filed a separate federal lawsuit to block armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement and FBI agents from operating at polling places and ballot drop-off sites. Local officials argue that federal threats to deploy armed agents violate federal law and jeopardize voter safety. The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security have denied plans for widespread enforcement at polls, characterizing the allegations as fearmongering and maintaining that their actions are lawful measures to ensure election integrity.
