Pentagon Report Reveals Strategic Munitions Shortfalls in Iran War

A report from the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General reveals that Operation Epic Fury, the military campaign against Iran beginning February 28, 2026, has caused strategic munitions shortfalls and exposed critical bottlenecks in the U.S. defense industrial base. The watchdog estimates the conflict cost between $33.4 billion and $38 billion through August, with approximately $22.3 billion spent on munitions alone. These findings contradict claims by President Donald Trump that the U.S. possesses virtually unlimited ammunition.

Iranian missile and drone strikes destroyed or damaged hundreds of buildings at U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan. Material losses include $3.7 billion in equipment, including four F-15E fighter jets, one F-35A, an A-10, seven KC-135 tankers, and over 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones. The destruction of the Navy's primary regional hub in Bahrain forced a shift in logistics to Diego Garcia, extending resupply cycles to 18 days. Additionally, U.S. diplomatic facilities sustained $184 million in damages, with the heaviest losses in Iraq.

Casualty reports vary, with figures ranging from 11 to 18 service members killed and hundreds wounded. While the administration has denied material shortages, analysts warn that the depletion of Patriot and THAAD interceptors could leave the U.S. unable to sustain a prolonged conflict with China. Diplomatically, the U.S. and Iran remain in a deadlock, with Iran's Supreme National Security Council rejecting negotiations until sanctions are lifted.
