St. Louis Fed President Calls for Imminent Rate Hikes

Alberto Musalem argues that the Federal Reserve must implement additional interest rate hikes soon to combat inflation and restore price stability.

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President Alberto Musalem stated Friday that additional interest rate hikes are necessary soon to bring inflation down to the central bank's 2% target. Speaking at a Shadow Open Market Committee event, Musalem argued that smaller, incremental adjustments made now are less disruptive to economic growth and the labor market than larger, abrupt actions taken later.

Musalem characterized the U.S. economy as resilient, citing a stable labor market and a 3.4% GDP growth rate, but warned that inflation is unlikely to ease without further action. He maintained that the best way to support employment and growth is to restore price stability in a timely manner.

These comments follow a Federal Reserve meeting this week where the policy rate was held steady in the 3.75%-4.00% range. While two policymakers dissented in favor of a hike, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh expressed encouragement regarding progress in lowering inflation. Warsh provided no specific guidance for the upcoming December 8-9 policy meeting, though financial markets currently anticipate a rate increase in December.
