Democrats Form Task Force to Counter Trump Election Plans

Congressional Democrats launched a task force and observer program to protect midterm elections from potential interference by President Donald Trump.

Congressional Democrats have convened a task force of at least 11 senators, staff, and outside experts to protect the upcoming midterm elections from potential interference by Donald Trump. The group is preparing for approximately 100 threat scenarios, including the possible deployment of federal troops to polling sites and a national election emergency declaration.

To counter these risks, the task force is coordinating with state and local officials and pursuing extensive litigation. Election lawyer Marc Elias reports his firm is managing 87 cases across 43 states, primarily targeting administration efforts to restrict mail-in voting and obtain state voter rolls. While 23 district courts have dismissed lawsuits seeking state voter data, the administration has secured an interim win in the Supreme Court regarding mail-in balloting.

President Trump has called for the passage of the SAVE America Act, which would require photo ID and proof of citizenship for voters. He argues these are necessary measures to ensure honest elections. In response, Democrats have launched the first-ever Senate election observer program to monitor voting and tabulation locations, as they currently lack the legislative majority to pass protective laws.
