Pharma Giants Pledge $500 Billion in U.S. Manufacturing Investments

Global pharmaceutical companies pledged $500 billion to expand U.S. research and manufacturing to avoid potential tariffs and reduce supply-chain risks.

Global pharmaceutical companies have pledged approximately US$500 billion in investments to expand research and manufacturing infrastructure within the United States. Major firms including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Roche, and Sanofi are ramping up domestic production to mitigate supply-chain risks and insulate themselves from potential pharmaceutical-targeted tariffs.

Pfizer reached a deal with President Donald Trump to invest US$70 billion in exchange for a three-year tariff grace period. Other companies, such as Merck and Sanofi, report that existing inventory management will limit the immediate impact of tariffs in 2025.

These investments include the construction of numerous new plants across North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Eli Lilly and Company is investing US$55 billion over four years to build multiple plants, while AstraZeneca plans to invest US$50 billion by 2030, including a new drug substance facility in Virginia. Roche Holding AG is investing US$23 billion to expand 10 facilities, and Sanofi is committing at least US$20 billion through 2030 to boost domestic research and production.
