Trump Accelerates Oil Development in Alaska's North Slope
President Donald Trump signed an executive order to accelerate oil and gas production in Alaska by lifting drilling restrictions in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.
Donald Trump launched an energy-dominance agenda shortly after his inauguration by signing an executive order to accelerate oil, gas, and mineral production in Alaska. This directive led the United States Department of the Interior to lift Biden-era drilling restrictions across much of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska and streamline project permitting.
These policy shifts, combined with discoveries of higher-than-expected crude potential, have triggered a resurgence of industry investment and a return of experienced personnel to the region. In March, companies including ConocoPhillips, Shell, ExxonMobil, and Santos bid nearly $164 million for federal leases in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The efforts aim to revitalize the Trans Alaska Pipeline System, which had previously faced production declines.
Recent operational milestones include the Pikka project, which began commercial production in May through a partnership between Santos and Repsol. ConocoPhillips is also constructing the Willow project, with production expected to begin in 2029. While industry leaders describe the trend as an Alaska renaissance, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmentalists warn that a gold rush mentality threatens critical Arctic ecosystems and prolongs global reliance on fossil fuels.
