Elon Musk and Sean Duffy Clash Over NASA Leadership

Elon Musk and Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy are locked in a public feud over lunar contracts and a proposal to merge NASA into the Transportation Department.

A public feud has erupted between Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, and U.S. Transportation Secretary and acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy over the future of the U.S. space program. The conflict escalated after Duffy announced that NASA would reopen bidding for the Artemis III moon-landing contract—previously awarded to SpaceX—citing that the company is behind schedule. Duffy has ordered SpaceX and Blue Origin to submit acceleration plans by October 29 to ensure the U.S. beats China to the moon.

Musk responded on X by mocking Duffy's intelligence, calling him "Sean Dummy" and "Sean Dangerously Stupid Dummy," while claiming Duffy is "trying to kill NASA." The tension is further fueled by reports that Duffy intends to fold NASA into the Department of Transportation to strip its independence, a move Musk and some members of Congress oppose. While NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens characterized these discussions as efforts to improve collaboration, White House officials reportedly believe Duffy has "overplayed his hand" and created "unnecessary chaos.

Amidst this instability, a power struggle for the permanent NASA administrator role has emerged. Musk has advocated for billionaire Jared Isaacman, a former nominee whom President Donald Trump previously withdrew from consideration over loyalty concerns. Isaacman has since re-emerged as a candidate, interviewing with Duffy and donating $1 million to a MAGA-related fund. White House spokesperson Liz Huston stated that the final nomination decision rests solely with President Trump.
