Illinois Democrats Rally Against Trump at State Fair

Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Democratic leaders used a state fair rally to frame opposition to President Donald Trump as their central campaign strategy.

Illinois Democratic leaders gathered in Springfield on Wednesday for Democrat Day at the Illinois State Fair, where they centered their campaign strategy on opposition to President Donald Trump. Governor JB Pritzker and other statewide officials framed the president as a common enemy, contrasting their state governing record with the federal agenda.

During the event, Attorney General Kwame Raoul highlighted legal battles against the Trump administration's attempts to deploy the National Guard in Chicago. U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren delivered the keynote address, praising Pritzker's leadership in the face of the current administration.

Despite their unified front against the president, the party faces internal instability. Federal charges have been filed against Representative Carol Ammons, and House Speaker Emanuel Welch is under scrutiny for his handling of sexual harassment allegations. Democratic Party Chair Lisa Hernandez stated the party is working to restore voter trust following the previous election.

Outside of the political rally, the Illinois Tollway approved rate increases for vehicles starting next year. Additionally, several state officials, including Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and Comptroller Susana Mendoza, have announced their candidacies for the Chicago mayoral election in February.
