Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro Tied in Brazil Presidential Polls

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and challenger Flávio Bolsonaro are locked in a statistical tie ahead of Brazil's October 4 federal elections. A BTG/Nexus poll shows da Silva with a narrow lead of 47% to 46%, though the race remains within a 2-point margin of error.

The political environment is strained by a fraud scandal involving the collapse of the São Paulo-based Banco Master, which triggered the largest depositor rescue in Brazilian history and caused massive losses for public pension funds and the state-owned Banco de Brasilia. A federal police report released September 1 alleges that jailed Banco Master CEO Daniel Vorcaro sought advice from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on whether to flee the country before his arrest.

Further allegations involve a $25 million legal consultancy contract between Banco Master and Viviane Barci de Moraes, the wife of Justice de Moraes, as well as luxury treatment provided to the justice's family. While Justice de Moraes and his wife deny wrongdoing, the Superior Electoral Court has unsealed investigations into Vorcaro and associated political figures. Simultaneously, federal police are probing Flávio Bolsonaro for alleged corruption, tax crimes, and money laundering related to the funding of a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
