Trump Increases DC Guard Troops Despite Study on Crime
President Donald Trump is increasing National Guard presence in Washington, D.C. to 5,000 troops despite a study finding no measurable impact on violent crime.
A report by the Niskanen Center concludes that the deployment of approximately 2,000 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., since August 2025 has had no measurable effect on violent crime, noting that rates were already trending downward before the mobilization. While the study found a 24% decline in opportunistic property crime in high-visibility tourist corridors, it characterized the deployment as a blunt and expensive instrument. The Congressional Budget Office estimates daily costs at 1.5 million, with total spending reaching 185 million between August and December 2025.
Donald Trump and his administration have dismissed the analysis. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called the report the work of keyboard warriors and asserted that the Safe and Beautiful Task Force transformed the city into a safe haven. The Joint Task Force-District of Columbia defended the mobilization by highlighting non-crime successes, including medical assists and NARCAN administration.
Despite the findings, federal officials are implementing a summer surge to increase troop levels to 5,000 ahead of America's 250th birthday celebrations. Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald announced the surge as part of a broader effort to reclaim the capital. Reports indicate the Pentagon intends to maintain soldiers in the city through January 2029.
