PIMCO CIO Predicts Further Federal Reserve Rate Hikes

Dan Ivascyn predicts the Federal Reserve may implement one or two more rate increases this year, potentially driving U.S. Treasury yields higher.

Chief Investment Officer of PIMCO Dan Ivascyn predicts that U.S. Treasury yields have room to rise as the Federal Reserve may implement one or two more rate increases before ending its current tightening cycle. Speaking at the Grant's Fall Conference on October 13, Ivascyn expects the Federal Reserve to hold rates steady later this month but anticipates at least one more hike before the end of the year.

This outlook follows multi-decade highs for 10-year and 30-year yields, which have been driven by investor concerns over rising oil prices and inflation. While Ivascyn believes the long end of the yield curve can absorb further tightening, he warns that rate-sensitive sectors are already showing signs of stress. He specifically noted substantial weakening in commercial real estate and housing.

Regarding leadership, Ivascyn suggested that Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh may be open-minded about the inflation process and inclined to keep rates constant. However, he noted that the Fed's committee may limit Warsh's maneuverability due to previous official communications regarding the necessity of further tightening.
