European Far-Right Leaders Use Protest Violence to Push Anti-Immigration Agendas

Far-right leaders in Europe and the United States are leveraging widespread rioting and looting to advocate for stricter immigration and security policies.

Far-right political leaders across Europe are utilizing recent waves of protest violence to promote anti-immigration agendas and authoritarian security measures. While demonstrations initially began as peaceful protests over public services and the cost of living, they escalated into rioting and looting in cities across France, Italy, Belgium, and Spain.

In France, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella of the National Rally have characterized the state as collapsing and the government as impotent due to security and migratory chaos. Similar narratives have emerged from Germany's AfD and Portugal's Chega party, both of which linked the unrest to mass migration. In Spain, Vox leader Santiago Abascal claimed that housing protesters were militias serving Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to riots in Milan and Bologna by passing emergency decrees that impose tougher penalties on rioters and their parents. Meloni noted that nearly half of those arrested in Milan were of immigrant background. The situation has also drawn international commentary, with U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance citing the French unrest as a cautionary tale regarding liberal immigration policies.
