Iran Sues United States for War Reparations in The Hague

The Government of Iran filed a lawsuit against the United States at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in February 2026. Tehran is seeking war reparations for damages caused by a 12-day conflict in June 2025, which it characterizes as a war of aggression.

The complaint alleges that the United States violated the 1981 Algiers Accords. Iran specifically cites a midnight U.S. strike on underground nuclear installations on June 22, 2025, the imposition of economic sanctions, and the provision of military and intelligence support for Israeli attacks.

These legal actions follow a series of hostilities, including a subsequent 40-day conflict from February to April 2026 that concluded with a ceasefire on April 7 or 8. Despite the ceasefire, the United States continues to maintain a blockade on Iranian ports. President Donald Trump stated that the primary goal of Washington remains ensuring that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
