Green New Deal Group Urges UK Heat Pump Program

The convener of the Green New Deal Group, Colin Hines, is urging the British government to implement a nationwide heat pump installation program and prioritize building energy-efficiency upgrades. Hines argues that the current political focus on short-term fossil fuel supplies is insufficient to combat climate change and advocates for a devolved energy program designed to lower utility bills and create secure employment.

Hines specifically criticized the energy policies of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claiming that a decision to drop investment in energy saving has already resulted in 12,100 redundancies among skilled professionals. This figure was supported by Andrew Brackman, chair of the British Energy Efficiency Federation. An estimated 80,000 additional redundancies are expected over the next year.

To address these losses, Hines suggests that the government utilize redundant workers and establish new apprenticeships. He claims this approach would simultaneously tackle the climate crisis and reduce youth unemployment by transitioning the workforce toward sustainable energy infrastructure.
