Atiku Abubakar Challenges Tinubu Over Failed Electricity Pledges

Atiku Abubakar and the ADC-PCC demand President Bola Tinubu account for failed campaign promises to end estimated billing and provide steady electricity to Nigerians.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) have challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for his 2023 campaign pledge to provide reliable electricity or forfeit a second term. Abubakar argued that the administration's reliance on the Electricity Act 2023 and a N4 trillion bond program to settle legacy debts does not equate to actual infrastructure investment or reliable power for citizens.

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) defended the administration, describing the power sector reforms as ongoing work. The council cited the metering of 1.5 million customers via the Presidential Metering Initiative and an agreement with German partners to upgrade transmission substations as evidence of progress. They further argued that critics ignored a qualification in the original promise, where the president stated he would provide reasons for any shortfalls before seeking re-election.

In response, the ADC-PCC accused the ruling party of attempting to reinterpret the commitment to avoid accountability. The council criticized the Band A, B, and C tariff classifications as discriminatory and asserted that policy frameworks are not substitutes for actual power supply. The opposition maintains that voters will judge the administration's performance during the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
