United States Withholds UN Dues Amid Global Institutional Decline
The United States is delinquent on United Nations dues as President Donald Trump marginalizes the organization through threats against Iran and withdrawal from the WHO.
The United States is currently delinquent in its United Nations dues, distinguishing it from 141 other member states that remain fully paid. Donald Trump has further marginalized the organization by withdrawing from the World Health Organization and using the U.N. podium to threaten the annihilation of Iran, stating he would "drive them into hell".
These developments occur as the International Committee of the Red Cross reports approximately 130 active armed conflicts globally. While the U.N. continues to provide critical humanitarian aid in Somalia, Gaza, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it faces internal and external pressures. Argentine President Javier Milei has criticized U.N. workers, describing them as "fatally arrogant parasites".
Institutional instability extends to the selection of a new secretary general. There are concerns that the United States, China, and Russia may block charismatic candidates to ensure the appointment of an inoffensive figure, a move that would further weaken the institution's authority.
